Trekking
The Ausangate Trek in the Vilconota Mountain Range
- Duration: 08 days
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Maximum Height: 4,800 meters.
- Season: January to March
Day 1: Travel from Lima to Cusco and to your hotel
Day 2: We will begin today in Cusco, taking the southern route toward Puno, continuing by the Vilcanota River. We will enjoy the pre-Inca village of Pikillacta as well as the colonial villages of Andahualillas and Huaro. Afterward we will arrive at Urcos and then take the road toward the plains in the mountainous region, where we will have lunch. In the afternoon the Vil Canota mountain range and the Ausangate will appear in the distance. We will arrive at camp Tinki. The hike takes approximately 5-6 hours.
Day 3: Today we will begin the hike, crossing the River Occongate and traveling through the hill country pastures, until we arrive at the foot of the snowcapped Ausangate where we will see a complete panorama of the snowcapped summits. We will then continue to the camp and thermal baths of Upis. The hike takes approximately 5-6 hours.
Day 4: Today we ascend up steep slopes to arrive at 4,500 meters. We will then pass by the Puca Cocha Laguna to the west of the snowcapped Ausangate. We will enjoy “ice waterfalls” resting on one side of our camp. The hike takes approximately 6-7 hours.
Day 5: Today we travel by small, turquoise lagunes, to ascend to the Ploma Pass, 4,800 meters. From here we will see on the southeast side, the snowcapped Ausangate and the Vilcanota Mountain Range. Truly impressive! We will lunch there before descending to Chilcapinaya Camp. The hike takes approximately 5-6 hours.
Day 6: Today we ascend through the Jampa valley, where will find the high mountain herders with their sheep and Alpacas. They make their wool yarn from these sheep and alpacas, as well as woven crafts. We will eat there and then continue to the northeast, around the Ticllacocha Lagune. After crossing the last pass, Pachas Pata, 4,650 meters. After the pass we will arrive at Pachas Pata camp. The hike takes approximately 6-7 hours.
Day 7: Today we will slowly descend through a valley until we arrive at Pacchanta village where we will have lunch and then continue to camp, close to the thermal baths. The hike takes approximately 4-5 hours.
Day 8: This day is the last day of our trek. We will complete a short hike through pastures where small communities of sheep herders and weavers live. We will cross them in the opposite direction along the Tinki road where we will have lunch. There the bus will be waiting to take us back to Cusco and your hotel.
